Certificate Course in Medicine and Law for Advocates and Legal Professionals

Reading the medical file

In short

Who it is for. Advocates, law firm associates, in-house legal and compliance teams, hospital legal cells, insurance and claims staff, paralegals and law teachers.

What you learn. How to read a hospital file, how courts decide whether a doctor met the standard of care, and how medical evidence is used in consumer, criminal, motor accident, insurance and succession cases.

What you get. Eight short modules of about fifteen minutes each, a quiz after each one, a printable working document from every module, a free bonus glossary of medical terms, and a certificate when you pass. One payment, twelve months of access.

Read module one freeEnrol, Rs. 2,999

Module one and its quiz open without payment and without a card. Enrol when you are ready, or not at all.

Most medical cases turn on a hospital file written by doctors, in their own shorthand, and judged by the standard of their own profession. This course teaches you to read that file and to test the medical evidence in it, from both sides: the patient's and the doctor's.

Written by Dr. Rupal V. Rana, MBBS, DCH, LLB, LLM, a medical practitioner qualified in law, in consultation with a High Court advocate. She is not an enrolled advocate. This course teaches the medicine a lawyer meets and the law that governs medical evidence; it is not legal advice and it does not teach courtroom advocacy.

Founding price

Rs. 2,999then Rs. 4,999

The founding price is limited to the first 200 enrolments. The standing price after that is Rs. 4,999.

Why there are two prices

Why the two figures, plainly. Rs. 4,999 is the standing price of this course, and the system that takes your payment is set to charge it from the 201st enrolment. Rs. 2,999 is the founding price for the first 200 places. It is an early place, not a discount. The course does not change between the two prices, other than the dated updates every course in the Academy receives, and a later rise never applies to a course you have already paid for.

One payment, no subscription and no renewal. Twelve months of access to all eight modules, all ten quizzes and the certificate. A later price rise never applies to a course you have already paid for, and nothing further is ever charged for it.

Enrol on the course

Two ways in: enrol now below, or read module one and its quiz first, free and with no card. Either is fine, and one does not cost you the other.

Enrol

We ask for very little: no enrolment number and no identity number.

Please enter your name exactly as you want it printed on your certificate. The certificate is issued in the name on your enrolment, letter for letter, including the title and any initials. Write to us before you finish the course if it needs changing, because a certificate that has issued has to be withdrawn and reissued.

By enrolling you confirm that you are at least eighteen years of age, and that clause 9.1C of the Terms of Enrolment describes you. We ask for no enrolment number and no identity number, and you must not give us any.

Payment is taken by Razorpay. Card details are never seen by us and never touch this site.

Read module one before you buy

Not ready to decide? Module one and its quiz open without payment, so you can see the writing, the depth and the way the questions work first. No card, nothing charged, and nothing charged later unless you choose to buy.

No payment and no card. You can buy the full course afterwards, or not.

What you will be able to do when you have finished

Not what you will have heard about. What you will be able to do, on a Tuesday, with the thing in your hand.

  1. Name the four forums a medical complaint can reach, what each decides and on what standard, and why the file comes before the forum.
  2. Read a hospital file part by part, the abbreviations included, and turn two hundred pages into a chronology that shows the gaps.
  3. Test the standard of care the way the Supreme Court does: Bolam as adopted in Jacob Mathew, logical analysis, error of judgment and the limits of res ipsa loquitur.
  4. Get the records lawfully, and judge whether a consent was real under Samira Kohli and BNS ss.25 to 30.
  5. Read an injury report, a post mortem report, a sexual assault examination, an age estimate and a DNA report under the BNS, BNSS and BSA, and know where each breaks.
  6. Choose, brief and test a medical expert, and conference a treating doctor without damaging the record.
  7. Plead or defend a medical complaint: jurisdiction by consideration paid, limitation from discovery, the Council route and the Jacob Mathew safeguards.
  8. Find the medical evidence that decides motor accident, insurance, disability, succession and end of life briefs.

How much of your time this takes

About five and a half hours in total, and none of it has to be done in one sitting. The course remembers where you are, on whichever device you open it on, one device at a time.

Eight written lessons, 18,368 wordsabout 102 minutes
Eight working document packs, 34 printable sheets, 7,950 wordsabout 44 minutes
Ten quizzes, 45 questions, with the authority explained on every answerabout 75 minutes
The scenarios to think through, and the authorities to check if you want toabout 60 minutes
The bonus module, a medical glossary for lawyersabout 50 minutes
Everything, 44,114 wordsabout 5 hours 30 minutes

Written in fifteen minute pieces for a phone between hearings. The working documents are ones you print and use: a forum map, a chronology template, a negligence worksheet, a records request letter, a criminal medical evidence checklist, an expert brief checklist, a pleading checklist and an evidence grid by type of brief.

The certificate. Pass every module quiz and the final quiz (12 of 16) and a certificate issues in your name, verifiable online. It is a certificate of a private course issued by DoctorLawyer Academy. It is not a degree, diploma or qualification of any university; it is not recognised or approved by the Bar Council of India, the UGC or any other regulator; it carries no continuing legal education credit; and it does not certify anyone as a specialist in any field.

How the course runs, start to certificate

1
Eight written modules. About fifteen minutes each, read in any order, at your own pace, on a phone or a laptop. Every legal proposition carries the case, section or regulation it rests on, so you can check it. Each module also leaves you a document you can use: a forum and standard map, a medical chronology template with an abbreviation table, a negligence elements worksheet, a records request letter and response checklist, a criminal medical evidence checklist, an expert brief checklist and doctor conference note, a pleading checklist and forum strategy note, and a medical evidence grid by type of brief.
2
A scored quiz at the end of each module. Five applied questions, not definitions: a situation, and what you would do. Four out of five to pass. Retake it as often as you like, and the authority is explained on every answer, right and wrong. Your best score is the one kept.
3
A final quiz across all eight modules. It opens once you have passed all eight module quizzes. Sixteen questions, two drawn from each module, twelve out of sixteen to pass. Your sixteen are not the same as anybody else’s. Retake it as often as you need.
4
A certificate of completion, issued once the eight module quizzes and the final quiz are all passed. It is signed by Dr. Rupal V. Rana, MBBS, DCH, LLB, LLM, and carries a number anyone you show it to can check on this site. It is a certificate of completion of a private course: not a degree, diploma or qualification of any university; not recognised or approved by the Bar Council of India, any State Bar Council, the UGC or any other regulator; no continuing legal education credit; and it does not certify anyone as a specialist in any field. An advocate's use of it is a matter for the rules of their own Bar Council.

The eight modules, and what each one leaves you able to do

01How medicine reaches the law: forums, people and the fileYou will be able to name the four forums a medical complaint can reach, say what each decides and on what standard, say who can be named in each, and explain why the file comes before the forum.Open first
02Anatomy of a hospital fileYou will be able to name the parts of a complete indoor file and who writes each, tell the time an order was given from the time it was done and the time it was charted, recognise a late entry and a correction for what they are, read a gap for what it proves on each side, and turn a large file into a timed chronology.15 min
03The standard of care, read clinicallyYou will be able to state the Indian test for the standard of care, identify where the standard for a given treatment is found and on what date, tell an error of judgment from negligence, say when res ipsa loquitur helps and when records defeat it, and set out a negligence case element by element for either side.15 min
04Consent, confidentiality and the right to the recordYou will be able to test whether a consent was real and covered what was done, apply the criminal consent provisions and the rules for minors and refusal, say when a doctor may and must disclose, and obtain or supply a hospital file properly within 72 hours.15 min
05Medicine in the criminal trialYou will be able to read an injury report, a medicolegal case paper, a post mortem report, an age report, a sexual offence examination report and a DNA report for what each proves and where it breaks, put the right BNS, BNSS and BSA provision to each, and test a dying declaration, an insanity plea and a conflict between the doctors and the eyewitnesses, whichever side of the case you are on.15 min
06The medical expert, and working with doctorsYou will be able to say when a medical expert is needed in each forum, choose and brief one, test any medical opinion for its materials, standard and reasons, conference a treating doctor as a witness, and stop a doctor client from altering the record.15 min
07The complaint against a doctor: consumer, Council and criminal routesYou will be able to name the right parties, commission, place and time for a consumer complaint in a medical case, plead it or answer it on facts rather than conclusions, say what the Council and the criminal court can and cannot do, and set out for either side which forum to use first and why.15 min
08Medicine in other briefs: motor accidents, insurance, disability, wills and end of lifeYou will be able to say, for motor accident, employee compensation, insurance, disability, will, termination of pregnancy and end of life briefs, which medical documents to ask for, who can certify or speak to them, and where the medical evidence usually breaks, from either side.15 min
BThe words in the file: a medical glossary for lawyers Bonus, freeYou will be able to read the everyday words and abbreviations of an Indian hospital file, tell what a patient said from what a doctor found and what a doctor thought, spot the abbreviations that carry two meanings, and know when a word must be confirmed by a doctor before it goes into a pleading.Free bonus · 15 min

The bonus module is included and costs nothing extra. The words in the file: a medical glossary for lawyers, with about 150 terms and 85 abbreviations arranged by where they appear in a hospital file, and what each means for a case. It sits outside the eight: it is not in the final quiz and it is not needed for the certificate. It has its own scored quiz for anyone who wants one.

This is education, not advice on your matter. Nothing in the course is advice about any particular client, patient, complaint, notice or case, and reading it does not create a relationship of adviser and client.

It is not clinical teaching. No module tells you how to run a case or how to treat anybody; it teaches the medicine a lawyer meets and the law that governs it.

Nothing is promised as an outcome. No course prevents a complaint, and none of this guarantees how any forum will decide anything.

It is not advice on any matter. Nothing in it is advice on any client, file or case, and the course does not review anyone's papers.
